Lapping is a precision surface finishing process that improves upon previously ground, machined or fine turned parts. Lapping is a stress free process without heat transfer to the parts. The lapping process produces a dull grey finish, commonly referred to as a lapping matte.
Lapping can be used to:
- Produce a desired surface finish
- Improve sealing faces
- Produce flat stress free surfaces
- Produce consistent batch sizes
Our experienced operators work a comprehensive range of single and double sided machines allowing us to achieve:
- One-off size tolerances of 1µm
- Batch size tolerances of 5µm
- Part flatness of 1 Helium Light Band(0.29µm)
- Parallelism of 2µm
We also have the capability to lap stepped and recessed faces. All tooling for such jobs can be designed and made in-house.
This enables us to process a variety of materials including but not limited to:
- Stainless and Hardened Steel
- Aluminium
- Bakelite
- Ferrous Metals
- Non Ferrous Metals
- Silicon
- Ceramics
- Glass
- Rubber Composites
- Gold
- Tungsten
- Titanium
- Graphite composites
- Hard Plastics
- Plastic composites
- Most materials can be lapped
